Stefan Asbury has been appointed as the Chief Conductor of Noord Nederlands Orkest based in Groningen. He succeeds Michel Tabachnik. With a contract of 10 weeks per season Asbury’s first concert in the position will be Autumn 2011. Speaking last week, Marcel Mandos, Artistic Manager / Programmer for the orchestra said, “The NNO is delighted with the appointment of Stefan Asbury. He is a wonderful interpreter and visionary. He's a great artist and top conductor.”
Formerly Music Director of the Remix Ensemble Casa da Musica Porto and currently Artist in Association with the Tapiola Sinfonietta, Asbury has served on the faculty of Tanglewood Music Center since 1995, currently holding the Sana H. Sabbagh master teacher chair on the Conducting Faculty and having previously been Associate Director of New Music Activities. In demand with many of the leading orchestras worldwide encompassing the US, Europe, Asia and Australia, recent seasons have included guest engagements with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, London Symphony Orchestra, RAI Turin, Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Orchestra of St Luke’s. He enjoys frequent collaborations with the German and Austrian radio orchestras, WDR Sinfonieorchester, HR Sinfonieorchester (Frankfurt), NDR Sinfonieorchester and ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien. Future engagements include return visits to the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra in April 2011, the Royal Concertgebouw (with Lang Lang as soloist) in September 2011 and his debut with Gewandhaus Orchester in June 2012.
